Thesaurus Payroll Manager supports share‑based remuneration as income, whereas BrightPay has historically only supported share‑based remuneration as shares (i.e. a benefit with notional pay rather than taxable income).
This difference meant that when importing from Thesaurus Payroll Manager:
- If a Thesaurus Payroll Manager backup file included share‑based remuneration recorded as income, there was previously nothing equivalent to map it to in BrightPay.
New support for share‑based remuneration as income
To address this, BrightPay now includes a new feature that allows you to record share‑based remuneration as income. This works in a similar way to Directors’ Fees in BrightPay:
- Share‑based remuneration can be added as an income item.
- It is treated as taxable income in payroll, rather than only as a notional benefit.
This means that when you import from Thesaurus Payroll Manager:
- Any share‑based remuneration recorded as income in Thesaurus Payroll Manager can now be imported directly into BrightPay as share‑based remuneration income, preserving the way it was originally treated.
Using share‑based remuneration income manually
The new share‑based remuneration income type is also available for general use, outside of Thesaurus Payroll Manager imports. You can:
- Go to an employee's open payslip from the Payroll menu.
- Add a share‑based remuneration (income) item to the employee’s pay.
- Configure it in a similar way to Directors’ Fees or other income items.
- Ensure it is processed correctly for tax and reporting purposes within BrightPay.
This gives you more flexibility in how you handle share‑based pay in BrightPay, whether or not you are migrating from Thesaurus Payroll Manager.
