When you move from Thesaurus Payroll Manager to BrightPay Cloud, you may see differences in monthly CWPS (Construction Workers Pension Scheme) deduction amounts. This is because Thesaurus Payroll Manager and BrightPay use different methods to convert weekly CWPS amounts to monthly figures.
- Thesaurus Payroll Manager method – annual pro‑rata
Thesaurus Payroll Manager takes the weekly CWPS amount and multiplies it by 52/12 to get a monthly value. - BrightPay method – calendar‑based
BrightPay takes the weekly CWPS amount and multiplies it by the number of CWPS pay days (Fridays) in that particular month, based on the CWPS calendar.
Because of these differences, Thesaurus Payroll Manager and BrightPay can show different monthly CWPS amounts, even though they are both based on the same weekly rate.
How Thesaurus Payroll Manager monthly CWPS imports are handled
To allow Thesaurus Payroll Manager monthly CWPS deductions to be imported accurately:
- BrightPay has introduced a new CWPS annual pro‑rata calculation method.
- When you import from Thesaurus Payroll Manager, the monthly CWPS deduction amounts are brought into BrightPay exactly as they appear in Thesaurus Payroll Manager.
- These imported CWPS items are marked to use the annual pro‑rata method in BrightPay, so the figures match Thesaurus Payroll Manager.
This ensures your CWPS deduction amounts remain consistent with what you had in Thesaurus Payroll Manager.
Using the annual pro‑rata CWPS method manually
The new annual pro‑rata CWPS calculation is also available as a user‑selectable option in BrightPay, outside of the Thesaurus Payroll Manager import.
If you prefer the annual pro‑rata method for monthly CWPS:
- Open the employee’s open payslip from the Payroll menu.
- Click on the spanner icon to the right hand side of the CWPS deduction.
- Choose the annual pro‑rata method for monthly CWPS calculations.
- BrightPay will then calculate monthly CWPS by taking the weekly CWPS amount and multiplying by 52/12, in line with Thesaurus Payroll Manager's approach.
You can switch between calculation methods if you wish BrightPay to use the CWPS calendar‑based approach instead.
