A Notice of Attachment or an Attachment of Earnings Order is a debt recovery order issued via the courts or a government department like the Department of Social Protection to be added to an employee's payroll.
In BrightPay Ireland, there is no standalone "Notice of Attachment / Attachment Orders" field.
A Department of Social Protection (DSP) Notice of Attachment must be set up manually as a custom Net Deduction (an after-tax, USC, PRSI deduction).
Step 1: Create the Deduction Type
To ensure the deduction is properly categorised and available to assign, you first need to create it at the employer level:
- Go to the Employer tab on the main menu bar.
- Select Deduction Types on the left menu.
- Click New.
- In the Name field, enter a clear description (e.g., DSP Attachment Notice or DSP Debt Recovery).
- Important: Leave all the checkboxes under "Deduct before..." (PAYE, PRSI, USC) unticked. A Notice of Attachment must be taken from the employee's Net Pay (after all statutory taxes have been calculated).
- Set the Default Repetition to Repeat until manually removed (or leave it as default to manage on the payslip). Click Save.
Step 2: Apply it to the Employee's Payslip
Once created, you apply it to the specific employee inside the payroll:
- Go to the Payroll tab on the top menu.
- Select the Employee’s Name from the list on the left side.
- In the Additions & Deductions section in the centre of the screen, click the Add button.
- Select your newly created DSP Attachment Notice from the list.
- Enter the monetary amount (€) required to be deducted for that specific pay period as instructed by the DSP letter.
Step 3: Managing a Cap or End Date
If you wish to edit how long the deduction runs so you don't accidentally over-deduct a total fixed debt, you can build in an end parameter:
- Click the Edit spanner icon next to the deduction on the employee's screen.
- You can change the repetition rule from here, choosing to have it repeat indefinitely or to repeat up to a specific pay period/date in the future when the debt is expected to clear.
Any deductions made from an employee's pay, must then be paid by the employer to the relevant department / issuer.
